Self-Care is it selfish?

Stress awareness day is 6 November and Self-Care week is from the 18th to the 24th Nov 2019.
For me, these two events have something in common which is generally not spoken about. That is the fact that we have been trained/educated to listen to others but rarely to ourselves. This can lead us to care for others at the expense of ourselves. This in turn generally makes us feel stressed.

We tend to see stress as something that is happening to us from the outside, like having too much work, or not enough money. When in fact it is caused by the way we think and what we believe about the situation we are in.  We feel we are in the  position of being a victim of our circumstances rather than in control. We might say, I have to look after an elderly parent rather than the fact we are choosing to do so because we would rather do that than leave them on their own, or pay someone else to do so.

Deep down, we know when something is right for us or not, but don't necessarily say anything when it doesn't, as this make rock the boat or displease others. Why do we continue to do this? Because as children we learned to bend and conform to other's will in order to be liked. This pattern will only work for so long and while you are getting recognition from others. Once an adult if you are continually seeking approval from others in order to feel good, you will struggle to feel whole, fulfilled and therefore stressed.

I have seen with many clients who have come to me with stress of some sort or another, that a key component is that they do not have a good self care practice, so feel overwhelmed, unappreciated and exhausted.

Is self-care selfish?

Fundamentally this is usually because they have been told (by well-meaning parents, the media, maybe even school or religion) that it's selfish to put ones own needs first. As you will know if you have ever flown, this isn't the case.  It is paramount to put your own oxygen mask on first, before you help anyone else.

It is as crucial that we care for ourselves, in the same way that we would care for others, if we are to be fit and healthy enough in order to be able to support others. There is no reason you should feel that you don't deserve it, other than the fact it's a belief which stems from childhood.

My aim is to help you change that and see how wonderful you feel and how much easier life becomes when you do practice the gift of self care in the many forms it takes.

As Christmas is approaching, I am hearing people talk about gift giving, and you may or may not get what you hoped for on 25 December, however you can always give yourself the gift of health through self-care.

Some of my client ask: How?

They find self-care such as exercise, a good diet, even meditation  confusing, complicated, tedious and even sometimes difficult to follow. This is why I love giving them simple yet effective tools and practices that they can use within their daily life. And some of them, I share on my Youtube channel
Self-care isn't just about all those things, but also becoming aware of how we think of ourselves, the things we say about ourselves in our own head. To do this we need to take time out from rushing around or following others and pause long enough to see those thought patterns.
I know not everyone has the time or the funds to have one-to-one treatment on a regular basis.

Why workshops?

This is the reason I organise workshops and events. I want to help more people access self-care modalities, which have helped me stay well and able to look after my family and my clients. Like my tools, these are fun, simple, easy to follow and allow you to be yourself, rather than follow strict rules and guidelines which take you away from being aware of what's going on in you and may also go against your sense of well-being.
One of these which has now been running for two years  at Liddington Village hall is a mindful movement practice afternoon workshop called 5 rhythms. The next ones are on 1 Dec and on 9th Feb.
It's easy because there are no steps to learn ( I have enough going on, without having to learn something else) and no partners needed (ideal as my husband hates dancing).
It has helped me be more aware and respectful of the different rhythms that go on all around and inside me. It brings back the freedom and fun in my body that gets lost with the every day demands. I reconnect with a place inside myself that is at peace and content with who I am.
Come and find out for yourself and join us on the dance floor.
Suitable for everyone! Whatever your level of fitness or unfitness, wellness or illness. No experience of any form of exercise required.
Booking is essential to avoid disappointment as places are limited. Early bird 20th Nov
Feel the joy of a flowing life.

New to Swindon:
Accunect Self Care Day; for you and your family!

DISCOVER A SIMPLE SELF-CARE PRACTICE THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE.…

Last August I attended an Accunect Self Care day in Frome. I am so impressed with the effects that I want to share this with people around Swindon.
I have experienced many workshops as part of my continuing education. Although I may use some of the techniques I learn, I have never come across one that is so easy to learn, use and so effective.

Ever since the course, I have practised the routine, which only takes a few minutes every morning before I get out of bed.  I feel I have had more energy and felt generally calmer and clear headed, when I have been under pressure. When I use it with clients, I sometimes pick up imbalances in their system and this has been a real eye-opener to the power this healing practice has.

So the second way to give yourself the gift of health is to find out more about Accunect.
If you can't make this one but would like to be kept informed of the next one please sign onto my updates list and include Accunect as a topic you want to know more about.
  • Contact me to book  a 15 min relaxation session that includes Accunect in exchange for a donation to my chosen charity which I am offering till the 8th January.
  • Learn how to do it for yourself on the 18 January which will also enable you to help others such as friends and family. It will be held at my practice in Swindon. Event details on facebook. If you want to book this workshop early bird is till 6th Jan 2020. Places are limited so you may want to reserve your place and also have the possibility to pay in 3 instalments if need be. Book here

Of course if you have any questions please get in touch and I will be more than happy to help.

Here Garbor Maté talks about the importance of self care as a care giver.

It's your age! Or is it?.....

As another year passes, is it really our years that determines how well we are?

Many clients come to me and tell me that their problem is due to their age.  If it is a knee problem for example then I have the following story to tell them: an 70 year old lady goes to the doctor with knee pain on her right side.  The doctor says well it's your age!  She sais, well my left knee is the same age and that doesn't hurt!

Research is showing more and more that what we think, how we perceive ourselves (often based on how others see us), which is what we believe, affects our well being and our physical health. Even to the point that it affects our age.

This body - mind connection is well known in the use of the placebo effect but those of the nocebo effect are much more powerful in my view.

As the article below mentions becoming mindful not of our breathing but of our thoughts, habits and what we have accepted to be true so far without questioning is the way forward for all our health.

This is key to my Body~Mind Coaching sessions.  I ask lots of questions and offer different perspectives that make my clients think (making them more mindful) and that can help them change their expectations of how well they could really feel. The process also helps them feel physically different which can re-enforce a new belief about themselves that feeling better is possible.

Read more about the studies and the fascinating results on perceived age, eyesight, the immune system and general well being.

So you might want to ask yourself: what am I ready to question, challenge and let go of to make next year the one where you turn your life around and live to your full potential?

If you can do that on your own that that is brilliant, if you want help with the process then contact me and I would be happy to go through it with you.  Have a happy New Year and a fantastic 2015!

What happens if you surrender

Surrendering does not mean giving up! With Body~Mind Coaching you experience what it feels like to surrender the weight of your arm for example and discover how much freer it feels and how you can then move it further and with less pain. This is one of the ways Body Mind Coaching is very different to massage. This enables you to take the benefits of the session home with you and benefit for much longer.

I hope you enjoy this 10 min video where Eckhart Tolle talks about what surrender means in practical terms.

Have you ever surrendered and had an amazing experience because of it?  I would love to hear your story and sharing it with others might help them surrender more and help you trust you can do it more often.

Happy New Year

I hope you had a nice festive season and that the western New Year has started well for you. If it hasn't you can start all over again with the Chinese New Year.
Year of the Horse
So what were your goals dreams and aspirations at the beginning of January?
Have you taken any steps to make them come true? If you haven't then they will just remain dreams.
You must take action if you want things to change and in many cases you must take at least one different action, because as Henry Ford put it: If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got."

Now have a think.... what is it that is getting in the way of you taking that action?....  Fear? It usually is, either fear of failure or of success. The latter often surprises people but many either consciously or unconsciously wonder whether they can live up to success and deal with everything that comes with it. (More on fear of success)

Whichever it might be for you, if you want your dream to come true and you keep finding umpteen reasons why you can't start the change NOW then contact me for a free 30 min consultation (via skype, phone or in person).  I can show you how easily you can get rid of all the blocks, unhelpful beliefs and fears that are getting in the way of you making your dream a reality, so you can live the life you want, whatever that may be. Have a fantastic journey

Fear of public speaking: 5 questions to help you manage your fear of public speaking

Here are some tips to help you with fear of public speaking.

1) If you were just talking to 1 person what would you say?
The issue is not actually self-conscious but other conscious. When you can be free of what others think of you, then you can be yourself and truly shine. Realise that all the people in the room are likely to know less about you topic than you do (unless of course you are in an exam)

2) What is the opportunity?
Is it really public speaking you are afraid of - or is it the consequence of something imaginary happening? Ask yourself: What is the worst thing that can happen? When you have the answer ask yourself what would happen next,… then what happens, then what… then… the worst thing that happens is often not as bad as we make out or it can be a re-routed opportunity. Whatever does happen you can learn something from it and you can always do better next time.

3) What is the real issue, the 1st trigger?
Mostly, we are not being self conscious enough the rest of the time (when not faced with an audience) to be aware of what is happening to the body and knowing what the initial first symptom is and what exactly triggered it. If we can spend time figuring that out then it becomes much easier to know how to manage it. Read more on this on my stormy weather blog (30-10-12)

You will probably find that it is something that happened in childhood probably at school when you first had to speak up in front of a classroom full of your peers (as you thought-ready to pick on you) and though this probably isn’t relevant any more it can still be the thing that is holding you back now.

4) What is the consequence if you don’t do the presentation?
Rather than focus on what might happen- what might go wrong when you speak in public, figure out what are the consequences of you not doing it. You may realise that doing it (possibly imperfectly) is better than not and this can then motivate you.

5) What is it you want to say?
As Peter Roper puts it: “know what you want to end with, then know where you are starting and massage the middle”. Don’t spend time focusing on all the detail, (unless you are giving a technical lecture) think about what impression you are wanting to put across, what is it you want your audience to get.

Now you have considered all of this do you feel any differently about public speaking? Your comments would much appreciated below.

If you still want more help then contact me and we can discuss how you could move forward and how Body~Mind Coaching can help you overcome fear of public speaking quickly, easily and for good!
