Self-Care is it selfish?

Stress awareness day is 6 November and Self-Care week is from the 18th to the 24th Nov 2019.
For me, these two events have something in common which is generally not spoken about. That is the fact that we have been trained/educated to listen to others but rarely to ourselves. This can lead us to care for others at the expense of ourselves. This in turn generally makes us feel stressed.

We tend to see stress as something that is happening to us from the outside, like having too much work, or not enough money. When in fact it is caused by the way we think and what we believe about the situation we are in.  We feel we are in the  position of being a victim of our circumstances rather than in control. We might say, I have to look after an elderly parent rather than the fact we are choosing to do so because we would rather do that than leave them on their own, or pay someone else to do so.

Deep down, we know when something is right for us or not, but don't necessarily say anything when it doesn't, as this make rock the boat or displease others. Why do we continue to do this? Because as children we learned to bend and conform to other's will in order to be liked. This pattern will only work for so long and while you are getting recognition from others. Once an adult if you are continually seeking approval from others in order to feel good, you will struggle to feel whole, fulfilled and therefore stressed.

I have seen with many clients who have come to me with stress of some sort or another, that a key component is that they do not have a good self care practice, so feel overwhelmed, unappreciated and exhausted.

Is self-care selfish?

Fundamentally this is usually because they have been told (by well-meaning parents, the media, maybe even school or religion) that it's selfish to put ones own needs first. As you will know if you have ever flown, this isn't the case.  It is paramount to put your own oxygen mask on first, before you help anyone else.

It is as crucial that we care for ourselves, in the same way that we would care for others, if we are to be fit and healthy enough in order to be able to support others. There is no reason you should feel that you don't deserve it, other than the fact it's a belief which stems from childhood.

My aim is to help you change that and see how wonderful you feel and how much easier life becomes when you do practice the gift of self care in the many forms it takes.

As Christmas is approaching, I am hearing people talk about gift giving, and you may or may not get what you hoped for on 25 December, however you can always give yourself the gift of health through self-care.

Some of my client ask: How?

They find self-care such as exercise, a good diet, even meditation  confusing, complicated, tedious and even sometimes difficult to follow. This is why I love giving them simple yet effective tools and practices that they can use within their daily life. And some of them, I share on my Youtube channel
Self-care isn't just about all those things, but also becoming aware of how we think of ourselves, the things we say about ourselves in our own head. To do this we need to take time out from rushing around or following others and pause long enough to see those thought patterns.
I know not everyone has the time or the funds to have one-to-one treatment on a regular basis.

Why workshops?

This is the reason I organise workshops and events. I want to help more people access self-care modalities, which have helped me stay well and able to look after my family and my clients. Like my tools, these are fun, simple, easy to follow and allow you to be yourself, rather than follow strict rules and guidelines which take you away from being aware of what's going on in you and may also go against your sense of well-being.
One of these which has now been running for two years  at Liddington Village hall is a mindful movement practice afternoon workshop called 5 rhythms. The next ones are on 1 Dec and on 9th Feb.
It's easy because there are no steps to learn ( I have enough going on, without having to learn something else) and no partners needed (ideal as my husband hates dancing).
It has helped me be more aware and respectful of the different rhythms that go on all around and inside me. It brings back the freedom and fun in my body that gets lost with the every day demands. I reconnect with a place inside myself that is at peace and content with who I am.
Come and find out for yourself and join us on the dance floor.
Suitable for everyone! Whatever your level of fitness or unfitness, wellness or illness. No experience of any form of exercise required.
Booking is essential to avoid disappointment as places are limited. Early bird 20th Nov

New to Swindon:
Accunect Self Care Day; for you and your family!

DISCOVER A SIMPLE SELF-CARE PRACTICE THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE.…

Last August I attended an Accunect Self Care day in Frome. I am so impressed with the effects that I want to share this with people around Swindon.
I have experienced many workshops as part of my continuing education. Although I may use some of the techniques I learn, I have never come across one that is so easy to learn, use and so effective.

Ever since the course, I have practised the routine, which only takes a few minutes every morning before I get out of bed.  I feel I have had more energy and felt generally calmer and clear headed, when I have been under pressure. When I use it with clients, I sometimes pick up imbalances in their system and this has been a real eye-opener to the power this healing practice has.

So the second way to give yourself the gift of health is to find out more about Accunect.
If you can't make this one but would like to be kept informed of the next one please sign onto my updates list and include Accunect as a topic you want to know more about.
  • Contact me to book  a 15 min relaxation session that includes Accunect in exchange for a donation to my chosen charity which I am offering till the 8th January.
  • Learn how to do it for yourself on the 18 January which will also enable you to help others such as friends and family. It will be held at my practice in Swindon. Event details on facebook. If you want to book this workshop early bird is till 6th Jan 2020. Places are limited so you may want to reserve your place and also have the possibility to pay in 3 instalments if need be. Book here

Of course if you have any questions please get in touch and I will be more than happy to help.

Why I don't have a New Year's resolution!

Happy New Year and healthy 2018

Yes, it's that time of year when people make New Year Resolutions.  As they are usually to do with health, you might be surprised that whether you have made one or not, is not important to me. Why? Because I know that most people who set one break it before the end of the month.

The 3 reasons I think most resolutions are broken is because:

1) They are not necessarily congruent with our values
2) They are often based on what other people think we should do.
3) Though they might help us reach a set goal, they are laden with rules, regulations and often everything but fun!

Colourful painting of footprints
Steps to a healthy life
I don't have a New Year resolution, but if you want to take steps to a better life, here is an idea of what you could do.
What is important to me, is to take time to become clear about what our values are. Then it becomes clear what steps to take to live by them.
If one of your top three values is health, like mine is, then when you are making decisions about what to eat or what to do, for example, you have clarity as to whether it will serve you and therefore live congruently.
I have my values that I live by. We all have different combinations of them and a short version of what mine are, look something like this.

What matters to me is to do things that are:

1) Good for my health. (why I do at least swimming, pilates or yoga every week)
2) Sustainable in the long term and does not inflict pain or strain on my body so I can do it in my 90's if I want to. ( why I would not do a marathon for example)
3) Give me freedom to be me and do things how I want or in my time frame. (Hence why I am self employed)
4) When I do them it is fun, enjoyable and I feel good.

I have found something that fits all these criteria, which is why I love it so much. It is a form of mindful movement meditation called '5 Rhythms' developed by Gabrielle Roth. You have fun and can be just who and how you are, not withstanding the fact it is good for your physical, mental and emotional health.

"Movement Meditation a “5Rhythms Taster Day” in Swindon

I started dancing 5 Rhythms, developed by Gabrielle Roth,  about 6 years ago.  Even though I knew it could be transformational, having seen first hand how it helped a school friend, at first I just did it for fun and the exercise.  It is easy because there are no steps to learn ( I had enough going on in my head, without having to learn something else) and no partners needed (ideal as my husband hates dancing).

It took a while for me to feel the benefits, other than getting out and having my own space, which anyone who has or can remember having a 2 year old around will understand is of great value in itself.  I was getting space by going to my pilates and yoga classes but 5 Rhythms was different, it was about being me, not following someone else.

The beauty of it is that you dance your own dance, within your own comfort zone so there is no need to do anything that strains your body. There are no steps to learn and you can never get it wrong. This brings so much freedom to the body that it frees the mind and the mind is so free to explore that it frees the body.

The classes and workshops have helped me be more in tune with what is going on in my life. I am more aware and respect the different rhythms that go on all around and inside me. Now it brings back the freedom and fun in my body that gets lost with the every day demands of bringing up a child and running my own business from home. It allows me to receive in the way I give to my clients.

 Can this really help me?

You can come and find out for yourself during our taster session on the 29th October

DISCOVER HOW CONSCIOUS MOVEMENT CAN HELP YOU TO BE MORE AT PEACE AND COMFORTABLE WITH THE RHYTHMS THAT RULE YOUR LIFE…

Dancing the 5rhythms’ is a beautiful exploration of our ability to be conscious of how we are in any one moment and to express this through movement.

“For me the healing occurs when someone finds their own dance, whatever it feels like, and goes with it, finding something new for themselves; and giving themselves permission to be just as they are.”

PROGRAMME

During the morning session we will go through the rhythms so that you can begin to feel them in your own way; I will encourage you to "FLOW"  for yourself then to allow the beat to take you into "STACCATO",  to then move into "CHAOS" with curiosity; to drop into "LYRICAL" and find that part of yourself that wishes to sing and embrace everything and then lastly to find peace and quiet in "STILLNESS".

In the afternoon session, we will go through the 5 Rhythms again but with more focus on being conscious of what is present for us in the moment and how our movement is affected by our thoughts and our feelings.   At the same time I will explore with you how each rhythm has its' own flavour and each session is an exploration into being mindful and in the present.

We will look for the "sweet spot", the place where we feel wholly together in body, feelings and mind; together with another, the group and the setting.  Searching for this combination of the whole self, and repeating the dance as we feel it, can lead into that energetic space where there is only the beat, your breath, your heartbeat and the space to be you

The music is varied: electronica, jazz, classical, pop, rock and roll, alternative, some fast some slow.

A job you love!

Watched this TED talk about finding a job you love. Not because I was looking for a new job, I love the job I do, but because I was looking for a different talk about jobs and work in Poland and this is what came up in the search.

I was compelled to watch and fully agree with it entirely.
Anything is possible if you believe it! My school reports made me think I was no good at writing and so it was ... until I decided to do something about it.
The things I conquered that I thought I could not do are:
-  reading in public (speaking was never an issue but reading was horrible)
-  writing a book - I am still on this journey as I have now printed my book of English nursery rhymes which I translated into French keeping the meaning and the melody - now I need to write in my own words my story and the health coaching I do into a book. Watch this space.

I hope this talk inspires you to do the things you love and grow by challenging your beliefs about what you can't do.

The jaw talk!

Releasing the Jaw: talk and demonstration from Body-Mind Coaching 16th Nov 8pm

You might not have worries about the sinking stock market, as this article from the Daily Grind alludes to.

But you may still have other business/life worries that are subconsciously causing you to clench and/or grind your teeth without realizing – especially when you are asleep. And, as the article goes on to explain, such activity can lead to a surprising number of damaging health issues throughout the body.

As you might expect, tightening the jaw in this way can be the cause of persistent headaches, tinnitus and sinus problems. But the repercussions of teeth grinding and jaw tensing can extend well beyond that.

Julie Nicholls of Body-Mind Coaching is putting on a talk and demonstration to show the extent of the effect this habit has on the body and how you can address it.
This is your opportunity to blow raspberries and puff out your cheeks and learn other techniques and strategies.

Language tip to remember things and get what you want!

Of course this is what many people say. This is because the brain does not recognise a negative. In the same way you can't not think of a pink elephant, you can't not forget. You can think of a blue one instead but this is not the same as not thinking of a pink one.

If you want to 'not forget' you need to tell your brain what you actually want it it do which is to remember and be specific about when you want to remember.

When we do remember it is important that we acknowledge our brain for what it has accomplished i.e. what we have asked it to do and remembered something.

However most of the time we beat it up about it and say, Oh I forgot..... actually no, you have just remembered! If you keep telling a child off, every time it does what you asked it to do (just not at the time you want, because you did not specify a time) then it will give up even remembering so that it doesn't get told off.   Tell yourself I need to remember to do/get such and such before I go to or before and give a specific time.

So remember, be kind to yourself all the time, there are plenty of people out there ready to put you down, you don't need to do it to yourself.
